Subsidised Fuel Availability Must Be Maintained Amid Global Energy Turmoil

Global geopolitical turmoil affecting the energy market should not disrupt public access to subsidised fuel oil (BBM), according to the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Hindu Student Association (PP KMHDI). The availability of Pertalite and Biosolar must be maintained to meet the community’s energy needs amid global economic uncertainty.

PP KMHDI Chairman Wayan Ardi Adnyana stated that current energy price dynamics are inseparable from international geopolitical developments, including escalating tensions in the Middle East that impact world crude oil prices. He said the public needs to understand that adjustments to non-subsidised fuel prices are a consequence of the volatile global energy market and are not solely influenced by domestic factors.

“In an uncertain global geopolitical situation, the government and Pertamina face significant challenges in maintaining national energy stability. The public must view this issue comprehensively and not be trapped by oversimplified narratives,” Ardi said in a statement on Friday (12/6/2026).

Nevertheless, KMHDI urged the government and PT Pertamina (Persero) to ensure the availability of subsidised fuels, particularly Pertalite and Biosolar, and that they remain easily accessible to communities across all regions of Indonesia. Ardi noted that these two fuel types remain the primary need for the public, especially lower-middle-income groups who depend heavily on stable energy prices.

“We ask Pertamina to maintain stocks of Pertalite and Biosolar in all regions of Indonesia. Adjustments to non-subsidised fuel prices must not be followed by shortages of fuels that are essential to the public. Stability of energy supply must be the priority,” he said.

Ardi also urged the public not to be easily provoked by information that could cause panic or worsen the situation amid the ongoing global dynamics. He emphasised that criticism and oversight of energy policy remain important, but must be conveyed constructively and based on accountable data and facts.

“We must not be easily provoked by narratives that seek to divide society or undermine public trust in state institutions. Public criticism and oversight are important, but they must be carried out constructively, based on data and facts, and always prioritise national interests,” Ardi stated.

KMHDI assessed that the current situation also serves as an important reminder for Indonesia to continue strengthening national energy resilience through diversification of energy sources, increasing domestic energy production, and developing new and renewable energy. Ardi said these steps are necessary so that Indonesia is not overly vulnerable to geopolitical turmoil and global energy price fluctuations in the future.

“The spirit of mutual cooperation between the government, state-owned enterprises, and the community is very much needed to maintain national stability amidst increasingly complex global challenges. With unity and collective awareness, Indonesia will be able to navigate this situation well,” he concluded.
