Subroto appointed as fellow at ISEM

NEW YORK (OPECNA): Dr. Subroto, who recently retired as OPEC
secretary general, has been appointed a senior fellow at the
Institute for the Study of Earth and Man (ISEM), and a
distinguished visiting professor in the Department of Economics,
at the Southern Methodist University (SMU).

A university press release said he would visit the SMU several
times each year to participate in conferences relating to energy
economics and the energy industry.

Subroto, from Indonesia, holds a master's degree from McGill
University in Canada and a doctorate in economics from the
University of Indonesia. He has done post-doctoral studies at
Stanford University and Harvard University.

"Dr. Subroto and the institute have worked closely for a
number of years and we look forward to continuing that
association," said ISEM president James Brooks.

"Our relationship with him dates back to his first year as
OPEC's secretary general, when he accepted ISEM's invitation to
make his first major us policy address under our sponsorship. He
is internationally recognized as an authority on energy and
economics."

"This, combined with his long and productive association with
OPEC, will be of great benefit to the institute and the
university."

Subroto served as OPEC's secretary general for two consecutive
three-year terms, which ended in June 1994.

Prior to becoming secretary general, he held various posts in
the Indonesian government, including minister of planning,
minister of manpower and minister of mines and energy.

He is now a professor of international economics at the
University of Indonesia and is director of the Indonesian Energy
Institute in Jakarta.
