Subdistrict council functions clarified

From Warta Kota

With reference to the letter to the editor published in Warta
Kota on Aug. 2, questioning the function of subdistrict councils
(Dekel), we would like to explain as follows:

Dekel were set up on the basis of Law No.34/1999 on the
provincial administration of Jakarta, with the aim of assisting
the subdistrict head to perform executive duties in a
transparent, democratic and public-oriented manner.

In carrying out council activities, each Dekel member receives
a monthly honorarium of Rp 500,000, starting from the date of
installation, as stipulated in Gubernatorial Decision
No.125/2001.

The public complaint about the lack of information on Dekel
job descriptions should not have been made because the councils
have existed for around four years and their functions should
therefore be familiar to the public.

In addition, Dekel have been engaged in regular meetings and
dialogs, in which their members exchange views with local
citizens on a variety of local matters, including the
responsibilities of their members.
