Sub-district Head Unaware of Cable Owner That Caused SMAN 6 Student's Death

The Kebayoran Baru sub-district administration does not yet know the owner of the fibre optic cable that dangled onto the road, causing an accident that killed a female student from SMAN 6 on Jalan Lauser, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. “We have not had any communication because we do not know who installed the cable either,” Kebayoran Baru Sub-district Head Rachmat Mulyadi told reporters in Jakarta on Friday. Rachmat confirmed that the dangling cable was a fibre optic cable above a road crossing. It is understood the cable slackened due to age until it eventually snapped and dangled downwards. Nevertheless, his office does not know for certain who owns the cable as that falls under police authority. “That is the police’s authority in the investigation,” he said. Regarding evaluation, his office will coordinate with the South Jakarta Roads Sub-agency and the state electricity company PLN. The incident occurred on Thursday (18/6) at around 5.30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time, when the motorcycle carrying the victim passed the location. The motorcycle’s handlebars are suspected to have snagged the cable, which was stretched across and protruding into the roadway, causing the vehicle to wobble and the rider to fall. The victim then fell and was run over by a passing school bus. The school bus is currently being secured by the traffic accident unit of the South Jakarta Metro Police and the victim was taken to the nearest hospital.
