Study Reveals How the Brain Recognises the Body's Nutritional Needs
Recent research has revealed that the body possesses a biological mechanism to inform the brain when it is lacking certain nutrients, particularly essential amino acids required for building and repairing body tissues. A study published in the journal Science indicates that the gut sends signals to the brain when levels of essential amino acids decline. These signals subsequently trigger a desire to consume protein-rich foods. The research, conducted on fruit flies, found that animals on a low-protein diet showed a preference for essential amino acids over other substances that offered no nutritional benefit. A similar pattern was observed in mice, which demonstrated a preference for protein-rich foods when their bodies were deficient in essential amino acids. In addition to increasing the desire for protein, the signal also suppresses the craving for sugar. According to the researchers, sugar provides energy but cannot replace the essential amino acids the body requires. The researchers believe these findings may help explain why a person sometimes craves specific types of food when the body is experiencing a particular nutritional deficiency, especially a lack of protein.
