Study Highlights Nicotine's Potential for Cognitive Function, Risk Literacy Still Needed
The ability to remember, maintain concentration, and process information is a crucial part of human cognitive function. A study titled ‘Molecular Insights into the Benefits of Nicotine on Memory and Cognition’ suggests that nicotine may influence these functions through several biological mechanisms in the brain. Nonetheless, researchers emphasise that nicotine remains an addictive substance, so the findings must be interpreted proportionately.
The research, conducted by Ahmad Alhowail from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Pharmacy, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, reveals that nicotine could potentially help improve cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s patients, whilst also supporting the recovery of memory and motor functions in Parkinson’s patients.
According to Ahmad, nicotine works by affecting the communication system between nerve cells, which plays a role in learning, memory formation, and maintaining neuronal health. This mechanism is thought to help preserve cognitive function in certain conditions.
Beyond neurodegenerative diseases, the study also found potential for nicotine in addressing memory disorders triggered by hypothyroidism, sleep deprivation, and chronic stress. In healthy individuals, nicotine is said to potentially support the memory formation process and enhance the brain’s ability to store information through biological activity involving nerve cells.
‘Although nicotine has characteristics that can potentially cause dependence if used inappropriately in terms of method and dosage, it also has several benefits, including improving cognitive function in healthy individuals and helping to restore memory function in patients with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and hypothyroidism,’ Ahmad was quoted as saying on Tuesday (30/6).
Responding to the study’s findings, Paido Siahaan, Chairman of the Indonesian Vape Consumers Association (Akvindo), stated that scientific findings regarding nicotine must be placed in a complete context and based on available scientific evidence. He believes the public has a right to be informed about research developments on nicotine, but such information must not be misinterpreted as justification for using nicotine-containing products without considering the risks.
‘We view the research results on the potential benefits of nicotine for cognitive function and memory as part of a legitimate scientific discussion, but they must be read carefully and not exaggerated,’ said Paido.
He stressed that nicotine-containing products, including various alternative tobacco products, are intended only for adult consumers, particularly smokers who wish to switch from conventional cigarettes. These products are not intended for non-smokers, adolescents, or vulnerable groups.
Paido also reminded that quitting smoking remains the best choice for health. He therefore encourages improved public literacy so that society can understand both the benefits and risks of nicotine in a balanced manner based on scientific evidence.
‘The potential benefits of nicotine in scientific studies should not be used as a reason for indiscriminate consumption. What we are promoting is risk literacy. Nicotine still carries risks, so its use must be understood proportionately, especially when compared to combustible cigarettes,’ he concluded.
