BATANG, Central Java: First and second grade students in a school in Subah district are having to learn in residents' houses, following the recent collapse of their school's roof.

SD Clapar elementary school principal Wahyurini said the roof collapsed on Sunday and caused no casualties.

She said the school had earlier asked the local administration to repair the school but had received no response.

Students would continue to be taught in makeshift classrooms in residents' houses until the school was finished, while the teachers' room had been moved to a local kindergarten, she said.

Indonesian Teachers Union Subah branch head Sukaryo urged the regional administration to quickly repair the school.

"We want the repair work to start immediately, so that students can study safely and comfortably," he said. -- Antara
