Students Visit Classmate Affected by Kemayoran Fire
A fire in the Kebon Kosong area, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, destroyed several houses, forcing residents to seek refuge in tents at the Jusuf Hamka Field. In response to the tragedy, a group of students organised a visit to support a classmate, Keisya, whose home was among those affected.
Observing the scene on Wednesday (3/6/2026), students arrived at the Jusuf Hamka Field starting from school dismissal at 3:30 PM. Keisya, a student from class XI-4 at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Jakarta, was one of the victims of the blaze.
‘We were shocked and saddened because our friend lost everything; all her belongings were burnt to ashes,’ said Kezia, one of Keisya’s classmates. The visit was a pre-planned initiative by the students to show solidarity.
‘We planned this since yesterday. We wanted to visit Keisya,’ added another classmate, Azka. The students brought various forms of aid, including clothing, bags, and cash donations.
Keisya expressed her gratitude for the visit, though she felt a sense of guilt for the inconvenience caused to her friends. ‘I am happy, but I am afraid of being a burden because it is quite a long distance for them to travel,’ she said.
The students’ homeroom teacher, Asma Zulhijjah, noted that the bond of solidarity among the students has been strong since they were in Year 10. She praised the students’ high level of empathy and noted that those unable to attend in person were encouraged to contribute through donations.
