Students Transfer Out After South Jakarta Primary School Collapse
Parents of students at SDN Kebayoran Lama 09 Pagi in South Jakarta say many pupils have transferred to other schools following the partial collapse of the building, citing safety and comfort concerns. Evi Afrida, a parent, stated that the school’s student population has fallen below standard, with two classes now totalling just 38 students compared to the previous 32 students per class.
Evi urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to provide a proper building for the students, especially as the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS) has begun, and new first graders need a safe and comfortable environment. She appealed for the reconstruction to be expedited.
The school currently has 274 students enrolled from grades 1 to 6, a decrease from the previous 300. The building partially collapsed on 27 November 2024, during the DKI Jakarta regional elections, amid heavy afternoon rain. Four classrooms and the School Health Unit (UKS) room were affected. While there were no casualties, parents remain anxious about the structural safety of the remaining building. Despite repeated requests for clarity from the school, no certainty has been provided, and religious study activities have also been postponed due to the incident.
