Students receive scholarships

PADANG, West Sumatra: A total of 763 students of Andalas
University received this year scholarships from various
foundations and bodies, Antara reported.

"Most of them are high achievers who come from poor families,"
said Alfian Saman of the university yesterday. The students had
to go through a tight selection procedure before they were
awarded the assistance.

He said every recipient of the scholarships and other forms of
assistance will be required to make reports about how they use
the money.

Andalas University now has 14,000 students enrolled in its
nine schools. Some of the scholarship donor agencies are the
Supersemar Foundation, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the
companies Bimantara, Toyota Astra and Darma Kalbe. (swe)
