Students Rally to Safeguard Implementation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution Amidst Global Challenges

The Student Alliance for Answers held a discussion bringing together various elements of the student movement at UPN Veteran Jakarta on Friday, 3 July 2026. The discussion resulted in a joint statement reaffirming the urgency of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia as the primary foundation of the national economy amidst the rapid currents of global economic and technological transformation. The alliance, consisting of GLM UPNVJ, KBM Unpam, KB UMJ, Himapolindo, BEM KM Atma Jaya, Himapol UPNVJ, ILMISPI, and student nodes across Greater Jakarta, assessed that the current implementation of a people’s economy requires far stronger commitment from all stakeholders. During the discussion, the students stressed that the complexities of the global market must not sacrifice the principles of kinship and social justice mandated by the constitution. Muhammad Irwansyah from KBM UNPAM highlighted the importance of consistency in national development direction. He argued that the government must be closely monitored to ensure it does not deviate from an economic path oriented towards the people’s prosperity. ‘We must strengthen our commitment to overseeing the implementation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution. The direction of national economic development must be oriented towards the people’s welfare, equality, and true economic sovereignty,’ Irwansyah stated. Meanwhile, governance and competitiveness were the focus of Rosyad Fauzi from Himapolindo. He urged the government to be more adaptive while firmly upholding the principles of a people’s economy. ‘The government must be encouraged to build synergy in creating economic governance that is transparent, just, and innovative. We need to strengthen national competitiveness without abandoning our roots in the people’s economy,’ Rosyad asserted. The student movement also offered a new, more substantive approach through the strengthening of research and evidence-based policy recommendations. Caesar Khalifa from GLM UPNVJ stated that universities and student organisations must transform into laboratories of ideas that provide solutions for the nation. ‘We call on all universities and student organisations to become spaces for the birth of ideas, research, and data-based policy recommendations. This is a tangible and scientific form of student contribution to national economic development,’ Caesar explained.
