Students raise funds for teachers

SALATIGA, Central Java: Students are raising funds to support
their teachers who were sacked for demanding that the rector step
down and that outspoken teacher Arief Budiman be reinstated.

Following the dismissal of several lecturers, the latest being
the dean of the School of Biology Dr. Bintoro Gunadi, a number of
lecturers and employees have also gone on strike to protest their
dismissals.

The students are now trying to compensate their teachers for
their losses in salary.

The lecturers recently launched a "moratorium" in a campaign
to force Rector John JOI Ihalaw to resign, and to have several
lecturers recently sacked by administrator reinstalled.

Several students interviewed by The Jakarta Post Wednesday
said they were more than willing to raise funds out of sympathy
for their professors.

They also felt that the crisis of leadership in the university
has dragged on too long and harmed the learning process there.
