Students protest military candidates

BANDUNG: Some 1,000 students staged a rally on Monday in Bandung,
calling on voters not to vote for presidential candidates with a
military background in the upcoming election.

Yanto, the protest coordinator, said that if they were
elected, Indonesia could return to dark authoritarian days of the
New Order regime.

There are three retired generals joining the presidential
elections, namely Gen. (ret) Wiranto, Gen. (ret) Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono and Gen. (ret) Agum Gumelar. -- JP
