Students Protest in Buleleng, Claim Free Meal Program Dominated by Elites

A coalition of students under the Cipayung Plus banner staged a protest at the Buleleng Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) on Monday (29/6/2026), criticising the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). The students argued that the management of the programme’s Nutritional Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) is dominated by elite groups, rather than empowering the broader community.

HMI Singaraja Chairman Didit Kurniadin questioned the ownership of the SPPG units, asserting that a government programme should provide the widest possible opportunities for the people. He also suggested that state funds would be better allocated to the education sector to address fundamental issues such as high dropout rates and students struggling to pay tuition fees.

The protesters expressed disappointment that no members of the Buleleng DPRD came out to meet them, viewing the absence as a lack of seriousness in addressing public aspirations. Didit warned that the group would return with a larger mass if their demands were not followed up within a week.

PMII Buleleng representative Nurhayati emphasised that the students were not rejecting the MBG programme itself, but demanding better governance. She highlighted the burden placed on teachers, who are already overworked yet are expected to assist with the programme’s execution. Nurhayati also called for a reallocation of focus towards teacher welfare, noting that many educators still receive inadequate pay. She stressed that any misappropriation of MBG funds would not only be a financial crime but would also rob children of their right to proper nutrition. The students further highlighted the stark inequality in infrastructure development, pointing out that many village roads in Buleleng remain severely damaged despite daily use by students and teachers.
