Students oppose school relocation

SEMARANG: Hundreds of students and teachers of two vocational schools SMK 7 and SMK 8 staged a rally here on Friday to protest Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip's plan to relocate the schools.

The mayor offered the schools around Rp 120 billion as compensation for their 3.8-hectare land and buildings located in the Simpang Lima business area.

The plan, initiated last September, caused anxiety among students and teachers. In 2003, they had also held a similar protest.

Similarly, some students and teachers of junior high school SMP 56 in Jakarta made headlines recently as they opposed the governor's decision to relocate them. --JP
