Students oppose PDI rival board

SEMARANG, Central Java: Over 50 students from various
universities here yesterday staged a demonstration in front of
the Legislative Assembly building demanding the authorities take
action against those who established a rival board within the
Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI).

The students also expressed their support for Megawati, the
chairwoman of the party's central executive board. They, however,
acknowledged that they are not members of the party but very
concerned about the party's prolonged crisis.

A few days earlier, Tridaya Koesoemopraja, a PDI activist who
represents the party in the local assembly, set up a rival
provincial board, Antara reported.

Head of the provincial Office of the Intelligence and Socio-
political Affairs Misnadi declared that the rival board and its
activities were illegal.

"We acknowledge only the legal board and believe the
activities of the rival one are illegal," he said. (16)
