Students Injured in Scuffle as Military Executes Land Eviction in Lenteng Agung

University of Indonesia (UI) students from various organisations have condemned the repressive actions of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel during the eviction of several houses in the Lenteng Agung area on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. A student and a local resident were injured whilst attempting to block the forced execution. ‘Several members of BEM UI and other movement nodes suffered injuries; we clearly condemn the repressive actions carried out by TNI members during this forced eviction,’ said the Chairman of the UI Student Executive Board (BEM), Yatalathof Ma’shum Imawan, at the scene. According to Athof, the repressive actions deeply hurt the people’s feelings. The TNI, which should protect the people, instead used its strength and power to intimidate the residents there. ‘It is clear and explicit that the constitution mandates the TNI to protect the people in order to safeguard state sovereignty. The residents and our fellow students are clearly Indonesian citizens,’ he said. Republika has not yet received a response from the Army or TNI Headquarters regarding the incident. Since early April, TNI members from the Army Engineering Centre (Pusziad) – Explosive Ordnance Disposal Engineering Detachment (Denzibang) began efforts to execute evictions of residents in RT 01, 02, and 03 in RW 10, Lenteng Agung Village, Jagakarsa. The TNI claims that the residents’ houses stand on state land designated for military use. However, residents are defending their homes, believing they have a legal basis. Athof revealed that since learning of the forced eviction attempts by the TNI, his party did not remain silent and wanted to help the residents. ‘We have been helping the residents since yesterday, some even stayed overnight there, but today we received repressive treatment that not only intimidated but also injured our comrades who were struggling alongside the residents,’ he said. To that end, Athof reiterated that the actions harming the residents and fellow students would be reported to the relevant agencies. His party intends to lodge a complaint with the central government and the DPR. A student, Muhammad Rafi Raditya, said that he was a victim of an assault by a TNI individual whilst helping residents block the officers. Rafi claimed he was kicked, hit, punched, and head-butted by a soldier. ‘There was also a resident whose head was struck, seemingly deliberately, by a hammer wielded by a soldier, and our friends, including myself, also received repressive treatment,’ he said at the scene.
