Students get scholarships
JAKARTA (JP): At least 900 students of elementary and junior high schools from Jakarta and 14 other cities in West, Central and East Java received scholarships worth Rp 439 million from PT Bayer Indonesia on Monday.
The donation was handed over by PT Bayer's director Ralph D. Petrich in a ceremony which was witnessed by Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare and Poverty Eradication Haryono Suyono, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
Ralph said that the scholarships were derived from donations from the firm's employees in the framework of the Bayer Care 1998 program.
"About Rp 180 million of the funds are given in the form of scholarships with each of the 600 elementary school students receiving Rp 150,000 and each of the 300 junior high school students Rp 300,000," he said.
The remaining Rp 259 million came in the form of 348,672 bottles of worm medicine to help eradicate body worms, he said.
Besides Jakarta, students getting the scholarships came from Karawang, Cirebon, Indramayu, Tegal, Pekalongan, Semarang, Pati, Tuban, Gresik, Surabaya, Pamekasan, Sampang, Situbondo and Banyuwangi. (hhr)
