Students celebrate SMP 56 anniversary

JAKARTA: Students and teachers commemorated the SMP 56 state junior high school 68th anniversary on Thursday by distributing red-and-white paper flowers.

"We hope the public will sympathize with our actions in the land swap deal," said Joni Elian, the school committee chairman, as quoted by Tempo News Room.

The students and teachers marched to the intersection of Jl. Panglima Polim and Jl. Melawai, South Jakarta, and distributed the flowers to motorists. They also handed out tumpeng (rice shaped in cones served with side dishes).

SMP 56's roll is still open for new students and the school is offering a single year's tuition for free. So far, 34 students have registered. -- JP
