Students call for prostitution ban

JAKARTA (JP): High school students think the government is
fighting a losing battle against the spread of HIV, a deadly
virus that leads to AIDS.

"The government's efforts in fighting the spread of the
disease are futile as long as pleasure-seeking businesses, which
inherently breeds prostitution are allowed to exist," said a
student of SMU 52 in, in North Jakarta, in a discussion last
week.

The school is located in the city's port area in North Jakarta
where a thriving sex business exists.

Students in this school demand that the center be banned if
the government genuinely wants to prevent the rapid and rampant
spread of the AIDS epidemic.

The discussion was held by the Indonesian Journalists
Association and Palma foundation last Saturday in connection with
the forthcoming Press Day on Feb. 9.

Current rumors suggest that the prostitution center will be
relocated to another area in North Jakarta, Rawa Malang. (14)
