Students brawl in Ciputat

JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of students pelted each other and buses full of passengers with stones in Ciputat, on the border of South Jakarta and Tangerang, West Java, on Saturday.

Junior high school students, in scout uniforms, were among the battling students from at least three private schools. The fierce fighting, in which some students sustained injuries, took place on Jl. H. Juanda.

Stone throwing occurred at least three times from early morning to noon even after police arrived. Police officers said they had just handled another brawl in the nearby Kampung Utan area.

At least one bus belonging to the privately-owned Mayasari transit company had its windows shattered. The passengers had to move to other buses.

One officer said the police are still looking for a man, believed not to be a student, who was armed with a knife during the brawling.

Residents say student fights occur almost every Saturday and sometimes on weekdays. (anr)
