Student Protest Outside Indonesian Parliament Heats Up as Demonstrators Burn Attributes

A student demonstration in front of the Pancasila Gate at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta escalated on Monday (15/6/2026) afternoon, with protesters burning demonstration paraphernalia and road equipment during the rally. Dozens of students from several universities, including Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ), Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang (UMT), the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IMM) Cirendeu, and Universitas Pamulang (Unpam), took part in the protest. The situation intensified when the crowd burned a number of protest attributes, including banners and traffic cones, in the area directly in front of the parliamentary complex, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. The students demanded that members of the House of Representatives (DPR) come out to meet them and listen to their aspirations, repeatedly calling for the parliament to open a direct dialogue. Some participants were also seen attempting to push over and tear down the security fences in front of the DPR/MPR/DPD building, as the action unfolded under close supervision by security forces. The demonstrators carried various banners and posters outlining their demands, which they hung on the entrance gates of the parliamentary complex to convey their message to the government and legislature.
