Student, police clash claims life

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A man who was hit during an overnight clash between police and proindependence students died in hospital on Thursday, officials said.

Philipus Murib, 30, died after intensive treatment for abdominal bleeding, a paramedic at Jayapura General Hospital said.

Antara news agency said Philipus was attending a seminar on Wednesday when students from Cendrawasih University began ransacking tents set up by organizers of a discussion on regional autonomy on the campus.

At least nine policemen guarding the venue were injured in the fray.

Jayapura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Daud Sihombing was quoted by the news agency as saying that Philipus had been taken to police headquarters next to the venue of the seminar for safety reasons.

The victim was later taken to hospital after he complained of stomach pains, officer Daud said, adding that he had suffered from recurring malaria. (edt)
