Undeniably, the government has decided to postpone the utility
hikes and to revise the price increase of fuel oil because of
pressure from student movements. The students initiated the
rallies, which were later picked up by other social groups like
employers and workers.

This shows that the student movement is still effective,
although the government's response to this pressure has yet to be
satisfactory.

Throughout history, student movements have always served as
the vanguard of the people. Many rulers have been toppled by this
movement. Even today, student movements are reportedly geared
toward toppling the present Megawati-Hamzah Haz government.
Again, reportedly, this movement has been manipulated by certain
groups such as the post-power syndrome and radical groups. It is
easy to deduce that students will only be sacrificed in these
groups' pursuit of their own political interests.

This is why students must ensure that their moral movement
will be free from any manipulation from outsiders. This movement
must be free from any political interests.

Students must prevent themselves from being manipulated by
such groups as the National Opposition, the National Presidium or
the Caucus of Nation's Saviors. Student movements will be really
significant if they are held for the common good. They must not
enter the realm of political practices, for example by demanding
the resignation of Megawati and Hamzah Haz.
