Student in Semarang Named Suspect in Verbal Sexual Harassment Case

Semarang - Police have named MFA (19), a university student in Semarang, as a suspect in an alleged case of verbal sexual violence.

The Head of the Women and Children Protection and Human Trafficking Unit of the Semarang City Police, Commissioner Ni Made Sriniti, stated on Friday that the suspect was named after investigators secured sufficient evidence.

According to the official, MFA was designated as a suspect following a report from a victim, who is also a student at the same university. Investigators have obtained evidence in the form of screenshots of conversations between the victim and the suspect, which allegedly contain elements of sexual harassment.

For his actions, the suspect faces charges under Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Sexual Violence Crimes. However, investigators have not detained the suspect.

“Because the potential prison sentence is less than five years, he is not being detained. However, he is subject to mandatory reporting requirements,” she said.

She added that the police have also coordinated with the university’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (PPKS) to determine if there are other victims. “The campus task force has already received several reports involving the same perpetrator,” she noted.

The case began when the suspect communicated with the victim, a student who works a part-time job providing delivery and storage services, on Wednesday (17/6). During this communication, the suspect allegedly sent messages containing sexual harassment. Screenshots of the conversation subsequently circulated widely on social media.
