The atmosphere at the Sultan Syarief Kasim Islamic University (UIN Suska) in Pekanbaru, Riau, suddenly became tense this morning. A man suddenly attacked a female student, initialled F (23), who was preparing to take her thesis defence.

The Head of Public Relations of the Riau Police, Commissioner Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, said the incident occurred at around 08.30 WIB. The victim suffered laceration wounds, while the perpetrator was immediately apprehended.

“The victim is in stable condition,” said Pandra in Pekanbaru, Thursday (26/2/2026).

The initial investigation of the perpetrator suggests that the attack was motivated by resentment and hurt feelings. The victim and perpetrator had a close relationship.

“The victim and perpetrator knew each other and had a close relationship,” he said.

Victim Was About to Take Thesis Defence

Commissioner Pandra revealed that the incident occurred on the 2nd floor of the Faculty of Sharia Law at UIN Suska. The victim was preparing to take her thesis defence at the time.

Unexpectedly, the perpetrator suddenly arrived and approached the victim. The perpetrator then attacked the victim indiscriminately.

“The perpetrator immediately approached the victim and caused her injuries,” he said.

Perpetrator Apprehended

The atmosphere, which had been calm, suddenly became chaotic. Thanks to the quick action of other students and security personnel, the perpetrator was apprehended immediately.

“After the incident, thanks to the cooperation and role of students and security personnel, the perpetrator was apprehended and the victim was immediately taken to the Bhayangkara Hospital in Pekanbaru,” he said.

As a result of the incident, the victim suffered laceration wounds to her head and arm. The perpetrator, initialled R (21), was taken to the Bina Widya Police Station for further investigation.

For his actions, the perpetrator is charged under Article 269 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning assault.

“The penalty is 12 years in prison, and the suspect has been detained to be held accountable for his actions,” said Pandra.
