Student in Pekalongan Still Hospitalised After Being Assaulted by Schoolmates
A ninth-grade student at SMP Negeri 6 Pekalongan, Central Java, identified by the initial F, is still receiving treatment at RSUD Bendan Kota Pekalongan after being assaulted by several schoolmates. The incident occurred during a school break in a toilet area at the back of the school on Thursday (13/8).
According to the school, the incident began with social issues and communication between students on social media. F was said to have a close friend of the opposite sex. The friendship issue then developed into tension after communications emerged via WhatsApp.
Former headmistress Qurratiani (Anik), who acted as spokesperson alongside the newly installed head of SMP 6 Pekalongan, confirmed the incident and said it was being handled by both the school and the police.
“Because there was physical contact that ultimately may have led to mutual resentment, physical contact occurred and ended with the victim being referred to hospital,” Anik said in an official statement quoted on Saturday (15/8).
Anik said three students were present at the meeting. However, based on initial accounts, two students made physical contact with F.
Neurosurgeon at RSUD Bendan, Bair Ginting, said that when F first arrived at the hospital, he was reported to be in a coma. However, after receiving medical treatment, F’s consciousness gradually improved.
“On admission, he was reported to be in a coma. Then, over time, after being given medication and oxygen, his condition slowly improved, and the latest report stated that he had begun to regain consciousness,” Bair Ginting explained.
According to Bair Ginting, a CT scan of the head also showed a relatively good condition. Doctors found no bleeding or bruising on the victim’s brain. “Although there is information about a possible skull fracture due to impact, this condition is not the main factor threatening the victim’s safety,” Ginting explained.
Meanwhile, police visited SMP Negeri 6 Pekalongan to provide guidance to students. Pekalongan Timur Police Chief Kompol Tri Handayani asked students to stop all forms of bullying and not to carry out retaliatory actions.
“We have also visited the hospital to monitor the victim’s condition and communicate with the family,” said Tri Handayani.
Tri Handayani said the school had summoned the students involved along with their respective parents.
The school said the parents of the students involved in the physical contact had expressed regret and stated they were ready to meet F’s family.
“We also asked the victim’s family to focus on F’s health recovery. In addition to medical treatment, the victim’s family requested assistance to restore F’s psychological condition after the incident,” Tri Handayani explained.
Police assured that they would help protect the victim from becoming a target of bullying again when he returns to school.
To date, F’s condition continues to be monitored by the medical team and is reported to be improving. Police and the school are still monitoring the development of the case and reminding all parties not to carry out retaliatory actions that could trigger new problems. (H-2)
