The case involving the discovery of a baby girl’s body in the Bumi Ayu residential area, Selebar District, Bengkulu City, is currently being investigated by the police. The infant is suspected to have been abandoned by her biological mother, a 17-year-old student in her final year of vocational high school (SMK).

Bengkulu City Police Chief, Kombes Pol Rahmat Hidayat, stated that authorities are still conducting examinations and investigations regarding the individual, referred to as SD. Consequently, the teenager has not yet been officially named a suspect.

“For now, SD has not been designated as a suspect as further examinations and investigations are ongoing,” Rahmat said in Bengkulu on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

Police have gathered statements from SD along with several pieces of evidence to uncover the sequence of events. An autopsy on the infant’s body has also been performed to determine the cause of death.

Rahmat noted that initial examinations revealed the presence of mud in the infant’s lungs. This finding is being further investigated to confirm whether the baby was still alive when abandoned or had passed away previously.

“When found, there was mud in the baby’s lungs, and we are still investigating whether the baby was alive at the time of abandonment or otherwise,” he said.

Based on preliminary findings, the incident began on Friday, 18 September 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM WIB. At that time, SD began experiencing recurring pain and discomfort in her lower abdomen.

Around 10:00 PM WIB, SD fell asleep. However, in the early hours of Saturday, around 2:00 AM, she woke up due to intense abdominal pain, feeling an urge to defecate.

SD then went to the bathroom. Shortly after, fluid emerged from her genitalia, and the baby, along with the placenta, was delivered naturally.

According to the police, the baby moved and cried after being born. In a state of panic, SD reportedly left the bathroom to retrieve a large black plastic bag.

The baby and the placenta were placed inside the bag. SD then carried them to a location under a bridge near her house and left them there before returning home to rest.

“SD gave birth naturally and was at 9 months gestation,” Rahmat added.
