Student dies of injuries sustained at Semanggi
JAKARTA (JP): One more student has died of wounds received in the bloody shooting incident at the Semanggi cloverleaf, bringing the death toll in the violent Black Friday clashes to 13.
Heru Subagyo, 23, of STEI economics college on Jl. Rawamangun in East Jakarta passed away at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
According to his younger brother Budi, Heru was shot while carrying a flag during the rally at Semanggi on Friday evening.
"Even though Heru had already fallen to the ground, the troops continued to beat him with sticks," Budi said.
Heru, who was also a student of the Open University, never regained consciousness.
As of Sunday, the death toll from the Friday the 13th clashes was 13, nine of whom died in the Semanggi clash.
The other four victims were volunteer security guards who were cornered and beaten to death by mobs in the Duren Sawit and Cawang areas of East Jakarta.
At least two people died on the previous day in a clash below the toll road at the Slipi intersection. The two confirmed fatalities were a senior high school student and a member of the Police Mobile Brigade.
Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) said a total of 15 people had died in the week's clashes. They are named below.
1. Sigit Prasetyo, student of YAI accounts college, shot in the chest at Semanggi.
2. Bernardus R. Norman Irmawan, alias Wawan, student of Atma Jaya Catholic University, shot in the chest at Semanggi.
3. Teddy Madani, student of the Indonesian Technology Institute in Serpong, shot in the neck at Semanggi.
4. Muzamil Djoko Purwanto, student of University of Indonesia, serious head wounds sustained at Semanggi.
5. Abdullah, student of University of Indonesia, serious head wounds sustained at Semanggi.
6. Unidentified, member of Volunteer Security Unit, killed by a mob in Duren Sawit.
7. Unidentified, member of Volunteer Security Unit, killed by a mob in Duren Sawit.
8. Unidentified, member of Volunteer Security Unit, killed by a mob in Duren Sawit.
9. Unidentified, member of Volunteer Security Unit, killed by a mob in Cawang.
10. Sulistyanto, student of YAI accountant college, died of undisclosed injuries sustained at Semanggi.
11. Meiliana, a woman who died of undisclosed injuries.
12. Unidentified, a man who died of undisclosed injuries.
13. Pvt. Prayitno, officer in the Jakarta Police Mobile Brigade, died in the Slipi toll road clash on Thursday of undisclosed injuries.
14. Lukman Firdaus, student of SMUN 3 senior high school, serious head wounds sustained at the Slipi toll road clash on Thursday.
15. Heru Subagyo, student of STEI economic college, gunshot and head wounds sustained at Semanggi.
The death toll reported by RSCM differed from figures released by the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), who said that at least 18 people died in the two days of unrest.
Some names on the Kontras list differed from the list collated by The Jakarta Post based on information released by RSCM, the only hospital in the city which is permitted to receive the bodies' of crime victims.
Kontras included the names of Kristine Niki Julong, Budi, Budiono, Sidik, Sulaiman Lestaluhu, Wahidin, Doni Effendi and Sutomo Karya among the dead.
Unfortunately, the group did not specify where their bodies were being kept. (bsr/jun/aan)
