Student Demonstrations Are Part of Democracy
EMUD (Emak Muda) Relawan Prabowo Chairwoman Oktasari Sabil has responded to PDI Perjuangan Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri’s statement supporting student demonstrations in Jakarta. According to Oktasari Sabil, the right to express opinions is part of democracy guaranteed by the constitution. However, she reminded that criticism should prioritise objectivity and not overlook the various efforts being made by the government to address the people’s needs. “We respect Ibu Megawati as a national figure who has made a great contribution to Indonesia. Expressing aspirations and criticism is the right of every citizen, including students,” Oktasari said in her statement. Nevertheless, Oktasari believes the government under President Prabowo Subianto is currently working hard to implement strategic programmes aimed at improving people’s welfare. She said the policies being implemented should be given the opportunity to show real results for the community. “We hope all elements of the nation can see the issue in its entirety. The government is currently focused on strengthening food security, improving the quality of human resources, expanding access to education, and maintaining national economic stability,” she stated. Oktasari said students have an important role as critical partners of the government. Therefore, aspirations conveyed through demonstrations should be seen as part of democratic dynamics. However, she invited all parties to prioritise dialogue and maintain national unity amidst the various challenges facing the nation. “Differences of opinion are normal in a democracy. What is most important is how all parties can work together to find solutions and maintain national unity,” she said. She also affirmed that EMUD will continue to support the development agenda of President Prabowo’s administration while remaining open to constructive criticism and input from the public. Previously, Megawati Soekarnoputri expressed her support for students’ right to voice their opinions when responding to a student demonstration in the Bundaran HI area of Jakarta. In her statement, Megawati also highlighted what she considered excessive security measures by authorities against the protest.
