Student Demonstration at Patung Kuda Concludes, Jl Medan Merdeka Selatan Reopens

A student demonstration in the Patung Kuda area of Central Jakarta has dispersed, and traffic flow that had been closed has now returned to normal.

detikcom monitoring on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan near Patung Kuda on Friday (19/6/2026) showed that police had reopened Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan from and towards Patung Kuda in all lanes at 17:20 WIB. All lanes can now be traversed by passing vehicles.

Traffic was observed to be busy but flowing smoothly. Vehicles were able to travel at normal speed on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan.

The road had previously only been partially opened. The closed lanes contained police barricade vehicles as a result of the series of actions.

Earlier, the Tani Merdeka group and the All-Indonesia Market Traders Association (APPSI) held a rally at the location from around 08:00 WIB to 10:00 WIB. They demonstrated their support for President Prabowo Subianto.

In the afternoon, from around 14:30 WIB to 15:30 WIB, a student group under the banner of the BEM Persatuan Indonesia Alliance staged a demonstration in the Patung Kuda area. They demanded dialogue with the government.

“We are also opening spaces for discussion dialogue with government officials who wish to directly debate students in an open forum. We are openly transparent to the government. And we also emphasise, there was a statement issued by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mr Sudaryono, in which he expressed opening a debate space for students openly. Therefore, we from the BEM Persatuan Indonesia Alliance firmly challenge him to attend an open discussion forum,” said Maulana Sai, a student from Jayabaya University representing BEM Persatuan Indonesia.
