Student brawl damages vehicles

JAKARTA: A brawl between mechanical engineering and civil engineering students at Pancasila University in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, on Saturday, resulted in nine motorcycles and one car being damaged.

"The students burned nine motorcycles parked in the university's front yard and damaged one car belonging to a fellow student," said Jagakarsa Police chief of detectives First Insp. Endang Adi.

Endang said all Jagakarsa Police officers were deployed to the scene to pacify the students, who threw stones and glass bottles at each other. No casualties were reported.

Traffic was tied up for several hours because of the brawl.

Police said rivalry between the two groups over the student committee chairmanship for the campus orientation program for new students was the cause of the brawl.

Endang said the university management had decided to suspend all campus activities for several days. -- JP
