Student brawl causes panic

JAKARTA (JP): Two groups of students clashed near Hotel Cempaka on Jl. Cempaka Putih in Central Jakarta on Saturday, causing panic among nearby residents and vendors.

Vendors quickly closed up their kiosks when the students began hurling stones at one another.

Traffic leading to the area backed up, forcing motorists coming from Senen and Pulogadung to make U-turns.

Police officers were called to the scene, but the students continued to brawl despite the presence of the officers. The students eventually dispersed, and no arrests were reported.

Student brawls have been a common occurrence in the capital for quite some time now. (amd)
