Student Alliance to Stage Demonstration in Jakarta Today
A number of student organisations from various universities in Indonesia will stage a demonstration near the State Palace in Central Jakarta today, Monday, 15 June 2026. The Bung Karno University Student Executive Board (BEM UBK) is among them. Chairman of the UBK Faculty of Law BEM, M. Abdi Maludin, said that besides his organisation, other student groups will also join. “Those confirmed to be joining are from Paramadina University, Pamulang, Trilogi, Institut Stiami, and PTIQ,” Abdi said when confirmed via WhatsApp message on Monday. In today’s demonstration, BEM UBK and the alliance are carrying the theme ‘Reordering Indonesia’ with six demands for the administration of President Prabowo Subianto. The six demands include temporarily halting and evaluating the free nutritious meal project and the Red and White Village Cooperatives; reviewing the Indonesian National Police Law. Furthermore, stopping militarism and upholding civilian supremacy; urging the government to take strategic steps to maintain the stability of the rupiah exchange rate and national economic resilience; demanding the government provide inclusive, quality, and affordable education rights for all Indonesian people. “Lastly, we demand that the government review the increase in fuel oil prices because it burdens the community,” said Abdi. Regarding the escalation of the crowd size, Abdi said that from within BEM UBK, the number of participants is estimated to reach 200 people. However, with the joining of several other campus organisations, the number is certain to increase. According to Abdi, the ‘Reordering Indonesia’ demonstration stems from the results of internal consolidation and studies by BEM at UBK, which see the country’s condition as being in decline. This condition can be seen in how various demands have emerged, from the discourse of Reformation Volume 2 to actions demanding the free nutritious meal programme be stopped. Previously, a student demonstration was also held by the University of Indonesia BEM alliance on Friday, 12 June 2026. The action planned for the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout area failed to take place after the demonstrators were blocked by joint TNI-Polri officers in the MH. Thamrin-Sudirman Street area. Police reasoned that the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout area is not permitted as a demonstration location, citing a Jakarta Governor Regulation that designates the area as a business and traffic epicentre. Nevertheless, the crowd still carried out the action titled ‘Towards a Bankrupt Indonesia’ around Jalan Sudirman-MH Thamrin.
