Structured Coordination Key to Securing Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, Says Analyst

Political and legal analyst Boni Hargens believes that structured and comprehensive coordination between the National Police (Polri), the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) is the main pillar in overseeing all stages of the 81st Independence Day celebrations. According to him, solid cross-sectoral coordination not only guarantees short-term security but also contributes to strengthening Indonesia’s democratic institutions, which have been painstakingly built over decades of the nation’s journey. “Cross-sectoral coordination between Polri, TNI, and BIN is key to the success of the national security agenda on all fronts,” Boni said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. He assessed that there is a clear picture of the key elements building national security readiness ahead of 17 August 2026, with Polri leading security coordination, monitoring the situation on the ground in real-time, and overseeing all stages of the independence celebrations from the central to regional levels. He continued that the TNI synergises with Polri in securing strategic areas, supporting national security stability, and participating in guarding official state events. Meanwhile, he added, BIN provides accurate and timely intelligence support to anticipate potential security disturbances and ensure early detection of various threats. On the other hand, Boni noted that regional governments and relevant ministries play an active role in overseeing celebration activities at the local level and ensuring the smooth running of all independence agendas. So far, he said, Polri has successfully built adequate synergy and cross-sectoral coordination with the TNI and BIN, an achievement that is key to ensuring security before and after the 17 August 2026 celebrations. As such, he stated that Polri’s commitment and seriousness in maintaining security are beyond doubt. Nevertheless, he reminded all parties to maintain a balance between the security agenda and civil liberties. He said this balance is not merely a procedural demand but a real effort to maintain and strengthen Indonesia’s achievements in building a healthy and dignified democracy. Therefore, he urged security institutions to always maintain a balance between security enforcement and respect for citizens’ civil rights as a reflection of a democratic and just rule of law. The firm statement was delivered as a guarantee to all levels of Indonesian society that the security forces have prepared thoroughly and professionally. It was stated that Polri is not working alone in this major mission, as close cross-sectoral coordination has been established with the TNI, BIN, various relevant ministries and agencies, and regional governments across Indonesia. This solid synergy serves as the main foundation for maintaining national security stability amidst the festivities of the historic day for the nation. The National Police Chief also emphasised that monitoring and coordination are carried out continuously at all times, considering that the series of independence celebration activities in various regions has already begun.
