Strong Winds Damage 58 Temporary Shelters for Flood Victims in North Aceh

Strong winds hitting North Aceh Regency, Aceh, have caused damage to 58 temporary housing units (huntara) occupied by victims of the Sumatra flash floods in the Langkahan District. According to reports from the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA), the extreme weather, which began on Tuesday (2/6), also struck several villages, including Rumoh Rayeuk, Buket Linteung, Geudumbak, and Langkahan.

The wind damage affected at least 58 temporary units, with the most significant damage occurring to the roofs of the structures. In Rumoh Rayeuk Village, 36 units were affected, consisting of 11 heavily damaged, 20 moderately damaged, and five lightly damaged units. In Buket Linteung Village, specifically in the Leubok Meuku hamlet, seven units suffered heavy damage, and one place of worship was also impacted by the winds.

In Geudumbak Village, 10 units were damaged, comprising four heavily damaged, four moderately damaged, and two lightly damaged units, while Langkahan Village saw five units sustain light damage. As of now, there have been no reports of fatalities, though officials are still in the process of recording the total number of affected residents and displaced persons.

The Head of BPBA, Bahron Bakti, confirmed the incident involving the strong winds in Langkahan District. “It is true, strong winds occurred in Langkahan District. The winds damaged the temporary housing units there,” Bahron told reporters on Wednesday (3/6).

He stated that field teams are currently managing the situation to ensure the needs of the affected residents are addressed promptly. While weather conditions in the area have reportedly improved, residents have moved their valuables to safer locations to anticipate further extreme weather. “Based on preliminary data, a total of 58 temporary units have been affected,” he added. The BPBA has urged the public to remain vigilant against the potential for extreme weather, which can occur at any time during the ongoing transition season in several parts of Aceh.
