Strong waves killed six
JAKARTA (JP): Strong waves on Bali's beaches killed six people between January and June of this year.
I Gede Barata of the Wisata Tirta Lifeguard Agency told Antara on Saturday the January to June period saw 28 accidents on a number of the island's beaches, including beaches at Dua, Tanah Lot, Canggu and Kuta. Twenty-two people were rescued, while six others perished.
He said most of the accidents occurred because victims did not heed no swimming signs posted on the beaches, and they also underestimated the strength of the waves.
There were 122 accidents on Bali's beaches in 1998. Of this number, 101 people were successfully rescued while 21 others died.
