Stroke Sufferer Dies in House Fire in Ubud
A house in Banjar Yangloni, Peliatan village, Ubud district, Gianyar regency, caught fire. One of its occupants, Ketut Marsa, died in the blaze.
“The fire broke out at 1.30pm local time. A man named Ketut Marsa died in the incident,” Gianyar Police public relations section head Ipda Gusti Ngurah Suardita said in a statement on Wednesday (21 October 2026).
Suardita said Marsa was unable to escape when the fire started. The 48-year-old had suffered a stroke, which left him unable to move.
Marsa died in the fire. Residents who saw smoke and tried to put out the flames with whatever equipment they had were also unable to do so.
The incident was then reported to the police and Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service. The fire was extinguished at 3pm and did not spread to nearby buildings.
“The fire had already grown too large for residents to put it out themselves. The victim, who was in his room at the time, is believed to have been unable to escape,” Suardita said.
Suardita said an investigation into the incident was under way, but the cause of the fire had not yet been established.
“The Gianyar Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Identification Unit (Inafis) are examining the scene to gather evidence and investigate the cause of the fire. They have also coordinated with the Forensic Laboratory as part of the investigation,” he said.
“The victim’s body has been taken to Ari Canthi Hospital in Ubud,” he added.
