Strengthening Wildlife Protection from Forest and Land Fires
The Minister of Forestry, Raja Antoni, has emphasised that wildlife protection is a vital component of managing forest and land fires (Karhutla). According to him, the impact of these fires is not only felt by humans but also by wildlife, which is highly vulnerable to fire and unable to seek help when threatened.
“The impact of Karhutla is not only on humans, but also on other living creatures that happen to be vulnerable to these fires,” stated Minister Raja Antoni at the Elephant Conservation Centre (PKG) Jalur 21 SM Padang Sugihan on Thursday (17/9).
Minister Raja Antoni noted that wildlife has limitations in communicating their condition when facing the threat of Karhutla. This differs from humans, who can signal or request assistance during emergencies. “They are living beings that cannot ask for help, provide SOS signals, or anything of the sort. Unlike humans,” he said.
Due to these conditions, Minister Raja and Antoni has ordered all ranks of the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) across various regions to strengthen wildlife protection efforts amidst Karhutla management. He stated that animal rescue must proceed in tandem with firefighting efforts.
“I have instructed all ranks of the BKSDA in all offices. While fighting the fire is important, it is no less important to protect our wildlife, which is an extraordinary wealth that we must protect together,” said Minister Raja Antoni.
In managing the impact of Karhutla on orangutans, Minister Raja Antoni stated that the Ministry of Forestry, along with partner institutions, has prepared a reporting channel for the public. Residents who find orangutans in villages are requested not to provide food or attempt to handle them personally, but to immediately contact the call centre so that BKSDA and its partners can carry out a rescue.
Minister Raja Antoni added that the handling of affected animals is also supported by various medical necessities, including oxygen and nebulisers to assist with respiratory issues. Equipment for the evacuation process and support from veterinarians have also been prepared to assist animals in need of help.
The condition of SM Padang Sugihan remains relatively safe so far. The area has also been equipped with firebreaks created by officers to prevent the fire from approaching.
He explained that reports include monitoring, assessments, and emergency steps taken, accompanied by smoke trajectory projection maps.
