Strengthening Surgeon Competency Key to Improving Healthcare Quality

Efforts to improve the quality of surgical services in Greater Jakarta continue to be strengthened. The Indonesian Surgeons Association of Greater Jakarta (PABI Jaya) has affirmed its commitment to delivering higher quality surgical care through the enhancement of medical personnel competency, the application of digital technology, and collaboration with various stakeholders. A PABI Jaya working meeting, held concurrently with a Mini Symposium in Jakarta, produced a number of strategic recommendations. One of these is a commitment to promoting high-quality surgical services in Greater Jakarta while asserting that general surgeons are considered competent as coordinators in emergency traumatology management in the Emergency Department (UGD). “The PABI Jaya working meeting encourages high-quality surgical services in Greater Jakarta. Furthermore, it is confirmed that general surgeons are deemed competent as coordinators in emergency traumatology management in the Emergency Department,” said PABI Jaya General Chairman Dr Yesaya Baringin Aroean SpB-ET FINACS. In the forum, PABI Jaya also reaffirmed the use of the SpB-ET (Emergency Traumatology Surgery Specialist) title for general surgeons. The title was previously announced by the Chairman of the Indonesian Surgery Collegium, Dr Supriyanto Dharmoredjo SpB-ET FINACS, during the inauguration of the PABI Jaya Board for the 2026–2029 period on 16 May 2026. The PABI Jaya board for the 2026–2029 period is led by Dr Yesaya Baringin Aroean SpB-ET FINACS as General Chairman, assisted by General Secretary Dr Asrul Muhadi SpB-ET FINACS, Chairman of the Advisory Board Dr Henry Boyke Sitompul SpB-ET FINACS, and five department heads who attended the working meeting. According to Yesaya, the new board carries the motto Rapid Response, Competent, Adaptive, Collaborative, Communicative, with a vision of making PABI Jaya a modern, professional, and relevant professional organisation for surgeons that provides benefits for its members while supporting the realisation of quality surgical services in Greater Jakarta. To realise this vision, PABI Jaya will implement a number of priority programmes, including the development of information technology and organisational digitalisation, competency enhancement through continuous education, strengthening collaboration with various strategic partners, and improving advocacy and member welfare. “Safeguarding the honour and dignity of Indonesian surgeons includes strengthening professional standards and professional ethics, monitoring and ensuring quality surgical service standards, conducting education both digitally and directly to health facilities regarding surgical ethics, and continuously enhancing the role of surgeons in the Emergency Department and the existence of the SpB-ET title,” he stated. PABI Jaya will also strengthen synergy with surgical education institutions, the Indonesian Surgery Collegium, social health insurance providers, professional organisations, and the Ministry of Health to produce increasingly skilled and competent surgeons. In the field of digitalisation, Yesaya continued, the organisation will develop various technology-based services, ranging from digital member data collection, optimisation of social media, podcasts, and call centres, to a tracking system for the validity period of Practice Licences (SIP) and Registration Certificates (STR) that will remind members six months before their practice licence expires. Furthermore, he explained, PABI Jaya will continue to expand continuous education programmes by keeping up with the latest developments in surgical technology, including facilitating its members to participate in various fellowship programmes to enhance professional competency.
