PASURUAN, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry is at a critical juncture. On one hand, it meets the majority of the nation’s drug needs, but on the other, it remains heavily dependent on imported raw materials.

This imbalance is now being addressed through strengthened domestic production, including the expansion of the infusion fluid industry, which is a vital part of healthcare services.

To this end, the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has emphasised the importance of accelerating self-reliance in the pharmaceutical sector as a strategic step to face these challenges.

“Locally produced finished drugs are indeed dominated by domestic manufacturers, but raw materials still depend on imports by 70-80 per cent; this is what we must promote independence for,” said Deputy for Drug, Narcotics, Psychotropics, Precursors, and Addictive Substances Supervision (Deputy 1) of BPOM, William Adi Teja, at the inauguration of Satoria Pharma’s Line 4 Factory in Pasuruan, East Java, on Tuesday (28/6/2026).

He explained that Indonesia currently has four pharmaceutical salt industry companies, three of which are located in East Java.

Their total production capacity reaches around 4,000 tonnes per year.

This amount is deemed sufficient to meet the national need, which is in the range of 1,500 to 1,700 tonnes per year based on 2025 data.

This situation opens up significant opportunities to gradually replace imports.

Concrete steps to strengthen pharmaceutical resilience are also being taken by PT Satoria Aneka Industri through its business unit, Satoria Pharma.

The inauguration of the Line 4 factory serves as an important milestone in increasing national infusion fluid production capacity.

“Increasing production capacity and adding new lines, we hope the national pharmaceutical industry will become increasingly self-reliant,” said William Adi Teja.

Meanwhile, CEO and Founder of PT Satoria Aneka Industri, Alim Satria, stated that with the operation of the new production line, the infusion production capacity is targeted to reach 230 million bottles per year.

It does not stop there; the company is also preparing the construction of Line 5, which will push the capacity to 400 million bottles per year by 2028.

He recounted the company’s long journey since its establishment in 2014.
