Strengthening Nickel Mining Governance to Meet Global Environmental Standards

The Indonesian government’s push for nickel downstreaming requires a parallel commitment to sustainable environmental practices, according to Emma Gagen, Director of Data & Research at the International Council on Mining and Metals. Speaking on CNBC Indonesia’s Closing Bell programme, Gagen emphasised that the scale of Indonesia’s mining operations necessitates strengthened governance, particularly in managing mining waste. She pointed to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GIMSTM) as a critical benchmark that should be adopted to prevent harm to local communities and the surrounding environment.
