Strengthening National Vital Object Security: Danlanal Balikpapan Visits PHM Offshore Oil and Gas Operations
In a move to strengthen security synergy for the Upstream Oil and Gas National Vital Object, the Commander of the Indonesian Navy Base (Danlanal) Balikpapan, Lieutenant Colonel Rudhiro Pratomo, visited the Bekapai offshore oil and gas operation facility on 22 July 2026. The asset, owned by PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), is located approximately 60 km offshore north of Balikpapan City. The visit aimed to ensure the continuity of safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly operations to support national energy security.
The official visit was received by PHM General Manager Setyo Sapto Edi, and was also attended by the Head of SKK Migas Representative for Kalimantan and Sulawesi, Haryanto Syafri, along with the SKK Migas Kalsul management team. Welcoming the delegation, Setyo explained that the success of upstream oil and gas operations is determined not only by facility reliability and worker competence, but also by strong synergy between the company, regulators, and security forces, including the Indonesian Navy, as security is the main foundation for maintaining the continuity of upstream operations.
He added that as the manager of upstream oil and gas assets classified as National Vital Objects, PHM requires strong synergy with all stakeholders, including SKK Migas and the Navy, so that operations can run safely, reliably, and sustainably. "This collaboration is very important in protecting the country’s strategic assets while maintaining the national energy supply," Setyo said. He explained that as one of the strategic offshore production facilities in the Mahakam Working Area, Bekapai plays an important role in supporting national oil production. Amidst the challenges of managing oil and gas fields that have entered the mature field phase, PHM continues to optimise operations through the implementation of a strong safety culture, reliable asset maintenance, operational innovation, and strengthening the security system to ensure production continuity safely and efficiently.
Meanwhile, Haryanto Syafri expressed appreciation for PHM’s performance in maintaining operational continuity and contributing to national oil and gas production. According to him, one of the keys to facing the operational challenges of managing oil and gas fields that have been producing for decades is ensuring security and occupational safety aspects, including the implementation of safety systems at offshore production facilities. Haryanto added that PHM remains an important contributor to meeting national energy needs. Amidst the challenges of managing mature oil and gas fields, SKK Migas Kalsul appreciates PHM’s efforts to maintain operational reliability, optimise production, and prioritise safety and security aspects.
On the occasion, Rudhiro Pratomo affirmed the Navy’s commitment to continuously strengthen coordination and collaboration with SKK Migas and PHM in maintaining the security of National Vital Objects in the waters. He stated that securing National Vital Objects is a shared responsibility, and the Navy is ready to support the security of offshore operation facilities through close coordination, conducting security patrols, and preventive measures against potential disturbances. Through this visit, PHM, SKK Migas, and the Indonesian Navy affirmed their joint commitment to continue strengthening synergy in maintaining the security and reliability of upstream oil and gas operations, aiming to support the smooth production of national energy and protect the country’s strategic assets.
