To support national energy resilience and optimise distribution, this state-owned logistics company has inaugurated Container Yard (CY) 2 Merapi. The facility, which began operations on 3 March 2026, forms part of the development of Kalog Pro services, particularly to support efficient, reliable, and sustainable coal transportation management based on rail mode.

KAI Logistik (Kalog) President Director Yuskal Setiawan stated yesterday that CY 2 Merapi is designed as a strategic logistics solution that not only increases transportation capacity but also addresses the increasingly dynamic challenges of energy logistics distribution. This also represents a proactive step by the company in supporting the South Sumatra Provincial Government (Pemprov Sumsel) regulation, which has imposed a ban on coal trucks traversing public roads since 1 January 2026, as affirmed in the South Sumatra Governor’s Instruction Number 500.11/004/INSTRUKSI/DISHUB/2025.

“Through rail-based transportation optimisation, KAI Logistik provides a safer distribution alternative that complies with regulations and reduces reliance on road transport,” he explained.

Located in Sirah Pulau Village, South Sumatra Province, CY 2 Merapi is directly adjacent to the earlier-operated CY 1 Merapi facility, planned with three entry and exit accesses connected directly to the Merapi terminal, thereby supporting smooth train movements and improving coal loading and unloading operational efficiency.

“This facility is designed with an integrated connectivity scheme between mining areas and hauling routes directly linked to the CY area, allowing all operational activities to be conducted without passing through provincial roads (crossings). This scheme aligns with efforts to minimise impacts on road infrastructure and the surrounding environment,” he clarified.

COMPANY TARGETS

According to Yuskal, with the operation of CY 2 Merapi, the company targets an increase in transport capacity in line with initial plans, namely serving up to two train sets per day. In the future, the facility is planned to have two loading and unloading tracks as an anticipatory measure against the increasing volume of coal transportation in the Sumatra region.

“CY 2 Merapi is projected to serve around 730 train sets per year, and with optimal operation of two transport tracks, its capacity has the potential to increase to 10 train sets per day. Overall, this facility is estimated to contribute to coal transportation of up to 3 million tons per year, thereby strengthening the national energy supply chain sustainably,” he stated.

FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT

Yuskal added that to support this capacity increase, KAI Logistik will gradually develop facilities and infrastructure, including adding transport equipment, providing operational support facilities, and enhancing human resource (HR) competencies.

All development and operations of CY 2 Merapi are carried out in accordance with applicable service standards and the implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable services.

“Through the operation of CY 2 Merapi, as our strategic partner, we are committed to supporting national energy distribution and delivering adaptive logistics solutions to the dynamics of the transportation and logistics sector. This rail-based transportation optimisation also forms part of efforts to implement green logistics through emission reductions and energy efficiency improvements,” he continued.
