Strengthening Lecturer Competence Crucial for Graduates to Tackle Modern Challenges
JAKARTA – UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Rector Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar has stressed the critical role of lecturers in producing graduates capable of tackling contemporary challenges. He stated that the quality of university graduates heavily depends on the dedication and competence of educators during the learning process.
This was highlighted during a lecturer capacity-building training organised by UIN Jakarta as part of efforts to improve campus education quality. Prof. Asep urged all lecturers to embrace their profession and view teaching as an intellectual calling throughout their careers.
“Love UIN by loving the teaching process until retirement. Lecturers who are passionate about teaching will produce students thirsting for truth,” he said on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
He argued that educational success is not solely determined by course content but also by the lecturer’s ability to inspire students. “Teaching methodology is more important than the content taught, and the lecturer is more important than the teaching method,” he added.
Therefore, enhancing lecturer capabilities is crucial for producing adaptable, creative, and resilient graduates. Prof. Asep also called for changes in university assessment systems, noting that evaluations should cover cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects, not just formative assessments, UTS, and UAS which predominantly measure cognitive abilities.
He explained that higher education must now produce graduates who excel not only in knowledge but also in ethics, collaboration, and skills relevant to societal and industry needs. “This training aims to strengthen our ability as lecturers to design relevant, innovative, and student-centred learning. Excellent lecturers produce graduates capable of addressing modern challenges,” he said.
