Strengthening Innovation, PGE Kamojang Area Achieves PROPER Gold Rating for 2025
PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PT PGE Tbk) Area Kamojang has received the Programme for Assessing Company Performance Ratings (PROPER) 2025 award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) with a Gold rating. This award is given as recognition of the company’s commitment to sustainable environmental management. The award was handed over directly by the Minister of Environment and Forestry/Head of the Environmental Management Agency Hanif Faisol Nurofiq during the PROPER Environmental Award event at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/4/2026). Hanif explained that this year’s PROPER award is carried out as a mandate of Law No. 70 of 2024. In the coming year, this assessment will become a state obligation in supervising all business units in the country. “At least there are 74,000 business units that have Environmental Management Efforts and Environmental Monitoring Efforts documents (UKL-UPL) and Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL). This is an obligation for us to monitor routinely every six months,” he stated. “Through an electronic reporting system, the aforementioned 74,000 must report routinely. Through that e-reporting system, we are developing it further with recommendations for environmental compliance ranking assessments. This will definitely involve district, city, and provincial governments. This is also to address the responsibilities of districts, cities, and provinces,” Hanif added. It is known that PGE Kamojang Area has successfully reduced houseload or own-use electricity consumption by 187,257.312 kWh, thereby achieving energy efficiency of up to 674,126 Giga Joules through the “SIGRA-35 (Gravity Reinjection System KMJ-35)” energy efficiency innovation. Other efforts include PGE Kamojang Area’s success in reducing negative impacts on air quality, particularly reducing emissions by around 83,050 tonnes of CO2eq, 0.139 tonnes of SOx, 2.117 tonnes of NOx, and 0.149 tonnes of PM10 through the “SIUNU (Production Well Steam Interconnection System KMJ-18)” emission reduction innovation. It also reduced NaOH waste generation by 0.378 tonnes through the “NaOH-SAFE (Sustainable Allocation For Efficiency): Reduction of NaOH Waste for Cooling Tower PLTP System Efficiency” innovation. As information, the PROPER award is routinely held as an effort to increase companies’ compliance with environmental regulations. The award is given using several parameters. PROPER is a public disclosure programme for environmental assessments. This programme is complementary or supplementary that can synergise with other compliance instruments. With this programme, efforts to improve environmental quality can be carried out more efficiently and effectively. The PROPER assessment criteria are divided into two categories: compliance and criteria for assessments beyond what is required by regulations (beyond compliance). Compliance criteria are based on the company’s efforts in fulfilling several aspects, including control of water pollution, maintenance of water sources, control of air pollution, management of B3 waste (hazardous and toxic materials), management of non-B3 waste, management of B3, control of land damage, and waste management. Meanwhile, beyond compliance criteria are more dynamic as they are adjusted to technological developments, the application of best environmental management practices, and global environmental issues. Some points in the beyond compliance assessment include the implementation of environmental management systems, energy efficiency efforts, emission reduction efforts, implementation of reduce, reuse, and recycle for B3 waste, water conservation and reduction of wastewater pollution load, biodiversity protection, and community development programmes.
