President Javier Milei of Argentina has affirmed his ambition to establish a “strategic alliance” with the United States under President Donald Trump’s leadership as official state policy. This was announced in Milei’s address to parliament on Sunday.

In his speech, Milei highlighted Argentina’s crucial geopolitical position, viewing the South Atlantic as a strategic theatre of operations for decades to come and asserting that Argentina must become a key player in the region. “We must create an American century: Make Americas Great Again, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego,” Milei declared.

He emphasised that Argentina possesses substantial advantages to support this alliance. “We have critical minerals needed by the West. We have energy, gas, oil, nuclear power, and renewable energy to supply large-scale production chains.”

Aligned with this alliance, Milei’s government provided full support for US military operations against Iran that commenced on Saturday. This positioned Argentina on high alert.

This decision was also motivated by historical grievance, as Argentina, home to Latin America’s largest Jewish community, has accused Iran and Hezbollah of orchestrating the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people.

Beyond foreign policy, Milei announced an ambitious package comprising 90 reforms designed to “redesign” Argentina over the next 50 years. These reforms encompass economic, tax, criminal law, electoral system, education, and defence sectors.

“There will be nine months of relentless effort for structural reforms that will reshape the architecture of a New Argentina,” he stated amid interruptions from opposition parliamentarians.

Despite 2025 being marked by accusations of official corruption and currency instability, Milei now occupies a strong political position following his victory in October’s mid-term elections.

Last week, the Argentine Congress formally passed the Labour Modernisation Law, which is Milei’s flagship initiative. This regulation permits working hours up to 12 hours, reduces severance pay, restricts strike rights, and lowers employer taxes. Though claimed to boost employment absorption, the law has triggered massive street protests over the past two weeks, with demonstrators viewing the policy as a setback for workers’ rights in Argentina.
