Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government asserts that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) must have its risks mitigated through appropriate governance to safeguard public data security. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria stated that proper AI governance is essential because AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult to distinguish between AI-generated fabrications and real-world conditions. “We call it synthetic reality. This poses the greatest challenge for us moving forward in mitigation efforts,” Nezar said, quoted from a press release by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs on Thursday. Nezar emphasised that the government views AI governance as requiring human control, especially in decision-making processes. “Artificial intelligence should be positioned as an empowerment tool, not a replacement for human roles,” he explained. According to Nezar, one form of AI governance that can be promoted for positive AI utilisation in Indonesia is by involving the strategic role of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as pioneers in responsible AI implementation. Several SOEs are deemed capable of leading AI utilisation, including in innovation, human resource development, and strengthening data security and sovereignty. To this end, the government is preparing various regulatory instruments, including a national AI roadmap and AI governance ethics, to ensure safe and responsible technology utilisation. “Please pray that the presidential regulation on the National AI Roadmap and AI Governance Ethics can be completed soon,” Nezar said.
