The government’s efforts to expand access to decent housing for low-income communities (MBR) continue to be strengthened. One such measure is the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme, which targets uninhabitable homes.

Home Affairs Minister (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian, together with Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait, directly inspected BSPS or home renovation recipients in Matraman District, East Jakarta City, on Friday (19/6/2026). The inspection, also attended by Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, aimed to ensure the aid reaches those in need.

During the visit, Mendagri and Minister PKP observed the interior conditions of the house and spoke with the owner. The occupant stated they had never previously received housing assistance, making the BSPS programme the first aid they have received while living in the home.

Based on the National Single Socio-Economic Data (DTSEN) managed by BPS, the resident in question is indeed eligible for home renovation assistance, considering both the condition of the house and their monthly income.

“This is indeed the President’s effort to resolve Indonesia’s housing problems, which are not easy,” Mendagri said during the dialogue with the aid recipient.

Mendagri further acknowledged that many people still live in uninhabitable homes, including in DKI Jakarta Province. Consequently, the number of homes targeted by the BSPS programme this year is significantly higher than the previous year. “But there is still a large backlog [of decent housing] that we must address,” he stated.

In addition to BSPS, the government is also implementing a policy of exempting the Land and Building Rights Acquisition Fee (BPHTB) and Building Approval (PBG) for low-income communities. However, Mendagri hopes that regional governments will not only rely on BPHTB and PBG exemptions to help citizens obtain decent housing. He encouraged regional governments to allocate Regional Budgets (APBD) to tackle this issue.

Such support is also needed from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. Ahead of Jakarta’s 499th anniversary celebrations, Mendagri urged all stakeholders in DKI Jakarta to further strengthen collaboration in resolving issues, including the problem of uninhabitable homes. “I also expect DKI to allocate a budget for housing,” he explained.
