Street vendors raided in N. Jakarta

JAKARTA: Around 300 street vendors operating under the flyover on Jl. S Parman, West Jakarta, were raided by city public order officials on Friday night. The vendors offered no resistance.

According to the head of the West Jakarta public order office, Jurnal Siahaan, the vendors had been warned about selling their merchandise at the location but most ignored the warnings.

"They have been given a location in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, but they preferred to sell their merchandise on a busy street like this one," Jurnal said as quoted by Antara, adding that he had noticed the number of street vendors in the area had grown larger despite the warnings.

"Their act is a violation of city bylaw No. 11/1998 on public order," he said.

As many as 200 personnel from the city public order office and police took part in the operation, along with 20 trucks used to transport the confiscated merchandise. --JP
